The Ducale square (1606) of Charleville-Mézieres is a XVII Century wonder of architecture, which was financed by Charles de Gonzague ( founder of Charleville). There is also a flamboyant baroque basilica (Notre Dame de L’Esperance 1499) as well as various religious buildings deserving interest.

Land full of history and inhabited for a very long time. The Ardennes owe their name to the forests which cover the area. “Arduinna” which is Celtic means "deep forest”. This huge forest which is mainly French, also stretches out to the South of Belgium and also to Luxemburg and Germany. There is another part of it in the North neighbouring department of the Meuse, in Lorraine.
